Digital Do-It-Yourself Spark workshops at Guildford Library on Saturday 9 July

The Digital Do-It-Yourself Spark workshops for adults aim to introduce participants to creative making using all sorts of materials and digital tools. Digital technologies including 3D printing and littleBits electronics will be available within the workshop. Workshop facilitators will explain how these technologies work and can be used creatively. Within the workshop you will be asked to work in a small group of 3-5 people. A creative design challenge will be presented for your team to explore and you will get the opportunity to do some creative making and discuss the digital technologies available, your design ideas and the workshop outcomes. This workshop is part of a research project being carried out by the University of Westminster. The aim of the research is to explore creativity in relation Digital DIY (DiDIY).

For us, the term DiDIY expresses how the growing accessibility of digital making technologies, alongside knowledge and data from the Internet and online communities, are enabling new ways for people to make things and do things.

We are seeking to understand how DiDIY creativity may be able to impact on wider creative society – for example, giving makers a sense of creative agency, or communities the resources to tackle local, social or environmental problems.

The workshops are aimed at over-18s and all participants will be asked for their consent to be photographed, filmed and/or interviewed during the workshops.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No: 644344.

More details can be found on the project website www.didiy.eu

The results will be published. They may be featured on our website, in project reports and papers, academic journals or other media. This research is one part of a larger EU programme examining many aspects of DiDIY.

We've found a local volunteer to run a Code Club, and we're just waiting for their DBS check to come through. Now we need to arrange the sessions, which will probably be late-afternoon drop-in sessions for children over the summer holidays. Image provided by Stuart Miles We are also looking at running lunchtime learning sessions, where our online resource suppliers could come in a talk about their products . We've still got the ambition of running a regular Minecraft session, but have not started planning this, especially as we have so many other ideas about Digital Friday that we would like to fit into the programme.

British Science Week..end!

I t might be Friday but there’s still plenty of time to celebrate British Science Week, with events and activities planned across the country this weekend. Guildford has a proud history as a hub of science and technology, with the world-class Research Park hosting some incredible pioneering companies.  These include the games company 22Cans  started by Peter Molyneux   - founder of Lionhead Studios, which went on to be bought by Microsoft and produce the popular Fable games. Surrey Satellite Technology , defence contractor  BAE systems , industrial gasses supplier BOC and mobile developer  Volantis  are other examples of the great mix of scientific minds that call Guildford home.
