Digital Club Debut

The first of its kind in Surrey, Guildford Library’s new Digital Club went off with out a glitch on the weekend.

The 8 – 12 year olds who attended the fully booked session were eager to get stuck into the exciting 12-week course, which started with assembling a Kano computer.
Kano is a company that set out with the mission to create a computer that any one could assemble, and learn valuable programme and coding skills from.

Seeing the physical components that go inside a Kano was a great start to the lesson and gave the kids a tangible appreciation for the intricacy of computers.
Whizzing through the fool proof guide books, The Digital Club members quickly progressed and began experimenting with code and use of the popular game Minecraft.

The 12 week Digital Club course follows the exclusive curriculum created by Mariéme Jamme, founder of #iamthecode – a global movement which aims to get one million girls coding by 2030.

Mariéme was proud to tell the children that by learning and sharing the skills taught at The Digital Club in Guildford, they would be joining a worldwide community of young people excited about coding and how it will shape the future.

We've found a local volunteer to run a Code Club, and we're just waiting for their DBS check to come through. Now we need to arrange the sessions, which will probably be late-afternoon drop-in sessions for children over the summer holidays. Image provided by Stuart Miles We are also looking at running lunchtime learning sessions, where our online resource suppliers could come in a talk about their products . We've still got the ambition of running a regular Minecraft session, but have not started planning this, especially as we have so many other ideas about Digital Friday that we would like to fit into the programme.

British Science Week..end!

I t might be Friday but there’s still plenty of time to celebrate British Science Week, with events and activities planned across the country this weekend. Guildford has a proud history as a hub of science and technology, with the world-class Research Park hosting some incredible pioneering companies.  These include the games company 22Cans  started by Peter Molyneux   - founder of Lionhead Studios, which went on to be bought by Microsoft and produce the popular Fable games. Surrey Satellite Technology , defence contractor  BAE systems , industrial gasses supplier BOC and mobile developer  Volantis  are other examples of the great mix of scientific minds that call Guildford home.
